What exactly IS a mobile strategy? Why exactly IS a mobile strategy? ...and when? Here are some thoughts... What is your customer doing when engaged with... a 4 inch screen? a 7 inch screen? a 9 inch screen? a 13 inch screen? ...15"... 17"... 27" screen? What is your customer DOING, thinking wanting when flaked out in front of the 72" screen? WHEN are they? NOTES: OCT 24, 2012 So, apple has added "range" to it's tablet screen category... why? Was this merely a defensive move, OR is there actually a need at rather than just a preference at 7" - I'm going for preference, suggesting (for now) that there really is NO real distinction between a 7" tablet engagement and a 9" tablet engagement... Gordon Gower Lets parse "could have done better"... lower price, leaving revenue on the table. No retina; well given the short supply, why not prime the market and establish a clear upgrade path to the mini 2.
Listen, the mini is as much a defensive product as it is a 'gap' filler... why let Android and Amazon fill this particular niche? Apple will carve out a spot for itself at 7" and... You and I will buy one next year when it meets our "snuff" and we realize our digital tool kit needs a 4" for quick instant media fixes, a 7" for that coffee break... 9" inches for those quiet moments between intensity... our 13/15/17" for hardcore efforts (ie work)... and our 70"+ for mindless relaxation. I have a hard time fitting 7"s into my current needs calculations, I may never... What Apple TRULY gets, the concept of "mobile strategy" is a silly notion... It's 'screen strategy'... Where are they? What are they doing...? and as equally important "When are they doing it"... Own them at any and all... when. as often as not... ask the crowd....

My quick thoughts, 'cause in all reality I don't care all that much about the hardware/medium, near as much as its impact on the message/medium... Apple does two things VERY well; 1) Make what wee need, and 2) Make what Apple needs... The iPad mini simply adds "range" to their tablet line. Same as much as they have "range" in their laptop line and used to have range in their desktop line (they've appeared to have 'pooped' this with no 25" iMac announced yesterday)... Do I need a 7" tablet in my "screen mix"... nope; does someone else, certainly... I'd say 10,000,000 folks will decide positively, "yes, yes I do" by this Christmas. Does Apple need "range, a "7" screen in their tablet line... Well, I think this is obvious... Why else would they release one? MORE IMPORTANTLY... and spouting soon on one of my some-such pages - What is YOUR screen strategy??? Where?
